One of my all time favourite series, also it comes straight from my country Honestly even if you don't play through the old ones, witcher 3 is simple to jump into and learn the lore and past events from the games.
It took me 346 hours to finish the entire Witcher 3 campaign and the DLCs. Incredible value for money. Great game.
Would definitely recommend picking these games up for $20. The games + DLC are around ~150 hours of great, immersive content. Also, the books are arguably better than the games. The 8 (7 are translated into English. The 8th book comes out translated in April 2018) books gives you background about the games and are overall good reads. Only nitpick with the English books is that the Polish covers are way better than the English ones. Spoiler: Polish Covers
