What makes a map shitty?

    I see people saying that a lot of maps are bad/shitty, but what makes a map like that? Is it because it's overplayed? Too big/small? Boring? Tell me

    Personally for me any map with too much open space is shitty. A map should ALWAYS have lots of enclosed spaces or at the very least have low visibility so that traitors can effectively kill without being seen

    I would say that it is up to individual preference, but for example Haven - Some people love it some people hate it
    One big problem with it is that it does not have block clips for everything so you have to jump up blocks. It also is not to scale on a lot of areas

    Mainly though it is 100% up to the players and how they like to play the game

    I don't care for how much a certain map is played. I love dolls and it's one of the best maps for TTT and it's "overplayed" because it's one of the best maps.

    I only think a map is bad if there's not enough mix in gameplay style and the design itself is bad. I don't like maps that are either too enclosed or too open because it favors one style way too much over others. NS Streets is awful because it's way too sniper oriented. Every single round I get peppered with sniper shots and I don't know where I'm being shot from. In contrast, Lost Temple is a map that you just can't snipe properly since there are way too many corners.

    Motel is a map that favors close quarters a lot more than sniping but it has a good design. Almost every single round, you walk around the entire map. You don't just stay on the same spot. 67thway is a map that you can snipe and be up close, but you generally stay in the same general area. You only go to the farm if you spawned there or you're a T and there's an AFK.

    Now thinking about Dolls, it's one example of a map that has everything. If you want to snipe, there are many spots to hide. If you want to just shoot people up close, there's plenty of space where you're not going to be seen. The only bad thing about it are the ladders that just refuse to work, but in general the map has plenty of space without becoming something too big for low population.

    It's pretty situational. Maybe all of above.
    Some maps can be very small or big, but I dont think we have a map that is too small or too big.
    Just about anything that makes the map seem frustrating to play. Like it being very commonly picked, looking like a garbage, having a bad design (like mc_treehouse, the waterfall part) etc

    A map has to have fun gimmicks or has to have something for the innocents to do.

    Airship has the gimmick of pushing people with ladder momentum // discombs // newtons.
    Lifetheroof has a lot of secrets.
    Community pool has the chairs.
    Nuketown has the T doors you can push people into // good discomb jump spots.

    A map can be great without a gimmick like dolls/motel but the only way a map can be good is if there is something special about it

    A map being overplayed can make it unpleasant to play on. I still think dolls and innocentmotel are decent maps (I used to love it when dolls got picked on an older community I used to play on where it wasn't overplayed), however, when dolls is picked as soon as it gets back on the map pick screen after two maps, I just get a bit bored.

    As for map qualities that are actually bad, too big and open and too small and closed just makes using certain guns suicide. A balance is nice but doesn't have to be even, as long as elements of both small and large are present it's probably alright in my book.

    Clue is too small for my liking, and the visual obstruction it's supposed to provide doesn't really enhance the gameplay like it would in other murder gamemodes. Also, obviously people just use c4 and nuke the map regardless, I don't really find it balanced when two c4s placed on diagonally opposites sides of a map can screw over most people.

    I don't like it when there's no environment hazards on a map, verticality being an easy way to implement such hazards. I like lifetheroof and rooftops for these reasons, and I wish they would add crummycradle because it's a good map :^). Even simple T traps like the pit on inno motel are nice. Anything that someone who's not paying attention will fuck up and die on will make me laugh.

    Other than that, no props = dumb and bad.

    Secrets help make a map better, actually fucking optimizing maps is helpful, and making sure that within a map you can basically use whatever gun you want. You can be sneaky or just start blastin lol

    Any map that has broken lighting and requires you to use one of the worst settings in gmod.
    Also, any small map that has too many areas for C4 to be planted aka C4 Clue

    Clue is fun for c4 spam because it turns into a whole new game (TIP: If you plant c4 on the wine cases in the basement with rightclick by the lightswitch you can't see the c4)

    Is this referring to when my guns become all chrome and shit? I've been playing on high settings for years now and was wondering if changing the settings does anything on those kind of maps.
