1. First there's a captcha/ddos protection thing: Spoiler: Checking your browser Spoiler: Captcha 2. Then there's the actual website: Spoiler: Website (by default you scroll) 3. Then if you click any of the buttons it pretends to be "processing" and after that it asks you to authenticate with steam(the sign in button top right presumably skips this part): Spoiler: Prompt 4. When you actually click "Sign in through steam" the website pretends that a window opened (it just looks like a window): Spoiler: The fake window This window is actually not a real window, you can move it around like a normal window, but it can't leave the browser tab it's in (it's actually made in html and part of the scam website, if you mouse over your browser icon at the bottom it of course won't be there): Spoiler: It's a html element 5. If you get tricked into logging in to that fake window then your steam login and password gets sent to the scammers, presumably a bot then quickly changes your password and sets up a Steam API key, which can later be used to have some control over your account even if you get your password back. This scam, including the convincing login pop-up (fake window) is described and warned for on steamrep: https://forums.steamrep.com/pages/hijacking/ Spoiler: Quotes(1) Spoiler: Quotes(2) Spoiler: The gif steamrep has as an example of this scam
Dude I remember the days it'd just absolutely spam the shiz out of everyone in your friendslist with a spam link Damn scammers getting sweaty nowadays
Dang that fake login screen is super convincing, I was just checking the URL and I was like hey that looks legit and then I saw your explanation. Pretty convincing scam tbh not surprised people are falling for it
