Say you are inno and the detective activates a trap on you, or uses a prop, one that can cause direct harm. Are you allowed to shoot/kill them in self defense, even though it wasn't a direct attack?
    For examples:

The hammer trap that smacks at you going down the stairs
The Swat Team/Sniper Team with battery charges
    The Explosive Barrel Hallway
The Dildo that propels you through space and maybe time

Assume in each case that you as the inno enter the danger area with it being safe, and the detective then makes it unsafe. You survive, with damage or without (if there is a difference, please clarify). In the case of swatting, that puts the entire map in danger.

Minus the swat team, only luck will let you survive an encounter with one of these, and there are still other traps that can get you.

TL;DR: Is there any situation where a detective doesn't have to directly shoot you/shoot at you (with a KOS) in which you are allowed to fight back, or do they just have complete impunity?

Hammer trap, no. It launches a barrel at you at the speed if light so youre probably dead anyway. Only the person being blown to smithereens detective can shoot back at the det. The person inside the tunnel IS going to die, so nobody else should fire on the det.

Dont know about this one havent played the map.

Ye If you get hit by a barrel damage, you can then kill the det.

I think This would be T baiting which dets are immune to. If he pushes someone with it, only that person can kill the det. No other person should kill them unless being attacked.

In some cases yes in some cases no.

In short, go by the same rule that you would go by in any other case.

If someone damages you then you are allowed to shoot back. If a detective damages you directly or indirectly then you are allowed to kill them.
Since detectives are the only true proven innocents in TTT you are not allowed to damage them if they haven't damaged you. That includes them activating a trap on you but not damaging you whatsoever.

Moreover, if a detective damages you by accident (be it a missclick or an accidental prop swing) and the fact that they do not wish to kill you/damage you further is painfully obvious then killing them is just toxic gameplay.(even if they damaged you first)

    TL;DR:
If a detective activates a trap on you/puts your life in danger and damages you, then you are allowed to kill them 100%.
If a detective activates a trap on you/puts your life in danger but did not damage you then you are not allowed to kill them.
If a detective damaged you accidentally and that is obvious then killing them is not advisable (even if damaged first).
If a detective puts you in danger you cannot and should not kill him unless said danger resulted in you getting damaged.

To illustrate using one of the examples provided by you:

A detective activates the SWAT team using the battery.(that is already meta gaming on the detective's side, along with RDM based on how many people get killed/damaged by the swat team.)You, an innocent see this. Currently you cannot kill the detective if you never got damaged by the trap yourself. You can however kill the detective if you do get shot at by the snipers but that is not advisable because of the fact that :

    • 1.You are not getting shot by the Detective directly, but by an NPC. (the detective is not actively trying to kill anyone himself and will be punished for every inno death/damage by staff afterwards)
    • 2.You killing the detectives will not aid the innocents in winning/stop the swatting, therefore you are only contributing to the problem.
It is also possible that a newbie detective might somehow activate the swat team trap without knowing what exactly it does. Therefore he is still committing RDM but theoretically never had any intentions of directly damaging you and thus killing him (after taking damage) would be more along the lines of toxic gameplay.(only if it is obvious that thedetective in question did not have any intention of harming you and your fellow inno buddies)

Overall killing a detective is never a good move if you are an innocent.(unless the detective is just RDMing everyone, and even then you must wait for them to damage you first) If they RDMed you in any way it is much better to inform staff and let the matter be resolved through the use of a slay.
If no staff members are on and you cannot get a hold of one then you may kill the detective if he is actively damaging you with the intent to kill.
If said detective damaged you by mistake/damaged you intentionally but stopped afterwards killing him would only aid the traitors. (Him damaging you intentionally/accidentally is still RDM on his part and it will be punished when staff come on or if you report him on the forums)
If worst comes to worst and it looks like no staff will be on for an extended amount of time gather any evidence you have and create a report on the forums.
    We'll take if from there.

In short, the only time you may kill the detective is if they first cause damage on you? No exceptions?

    Not entirely.
There has been few other instances where you can kill the detective when they haven't damaged you.

In regards to your original question regarding Detectives using map traps, no.

But overall there are exceptions to that, as pointed out by Agent A above me.
