So I bought a template online and I don't even have the right version for it. I have AE 2015 and it says it was made with AE 2013 and cant be opened with my program. Kinda of annoyed that they didn't update their template on the site or at least mention what program it was locked to.

If you ask me, you would have to download the correct after effects version or find a different template.
Another thing you could do is youtube a tutorial as most templates have atleast ten tutorials.

edit: turns out his "updated" version was cc 2014 which I still can't open lol

edit edit: found out you can download cc 2014 if you have 2015, we good.
