Solution is to whip those that can to do their requirement and demote those that can't or aren't willing to. Staff at this point use more time finding reasons to excuse the lack of staffing than they do being on the servers. Staff has no reason to keep deadweights on the team. There is no diffrence between a open slot and a mod that isn't doing anything. There is no reason to be lenient for volunteers. If they can't do their job they should probably not have applied to begin with.

honestly, it's a lot less fun to be staff right now than it has been in the past ( for me at least ). when it's enjoyable to be staffing obviously staff tend to be more active. during my last tenure the team was way more connected with each other and supportive and morale was much better. for example, i had an absence in my last tenure for important personal reasons, and everybody was supportive and happy to have me back after things were sorted. a few weeks ago i was inactive for a week because i was traveling and literally couldnt reach a computer, and i had staff members talking shit about me in discord staff chat (where i could literally see it...). it's true we should take quality over quantity when it comes to staff, but right now we have neither in my opinion.

I think it would be more important to fill the empty slots first, then start replacing the bad slots

I think this is important to note. @TangoFox totally killed that team atmosphere of the staff team. He had a real similar approach to leadership that @Falcor had and used this hellstone and brimfire approach where staff members were constantly walking on eggshells and didn't feel like they were able to express themselves without getting chewed out or threatened to demotion. This totally killed staff moral and the staff team is only now starting to recover from this a bit.

I think a lot of this goes back to showing appreciation to the staff team who are working as volunteers, which is why I do agree that staff incentives is a good idea, I'm just not very optimistic that points is where it's at. There is only a select few staff members who don't already have everything as it is-- so points are pretty much going to be useless, and unfortunately to make anything that WOULD be worth it is going to take some developer power, which SGM doesn't have right now. If you don't have a staff team that enjoys staffing well... they're not going to staff. I don't think there is a solution that is going to be attainable right now. At least not one that will work long term without making matters worst in the future.

  16. Why not just pass down admin responsibilities to senior moderators? That doesn't mean make every mod admin, but rather allow them to shadow newer staff members. It seems like the jump from moderator to admin is missing something previous to each. Yes, there is a "trial" period, but I think you'd be better off having low level staff members that are newer and still training - a server I was a server manager of called these players "staff-in-training". This position tended to have more active staff members, though, lacking some form of attribute to make seniors go, 'ok, you earned a promotion.' It's not about having a secluded admin team, but an admin team where people who display good in-game attitudes deserve chances to show they're readily available and willing to do something.

Secondly, the application to be a staff member seems profoundly stressed and overzealous. It's a video game, people are not applying for something they are paid for. My previous server also allowed the community to be involved in who gets admin by vouching for them, stating positive or negative attributes consistent in their playing. Ultimately, it was always in the hands of the senior admins to decide, and if they agreed, they'd move through into this training position. I think the admin process is well thought out and written, but maybe a little too well written where it boarders sweatshop level dedication.

Lastly, that redirects back to my first point, why not add more classes of staff ranks? All I have seen so far is moderator to admin, and only one or two trial moderators. I think an expansion of ranks would allow newer players to move in, especially if the application process is open. I find it absolutely bizarre inactive staff members are voting on active players, some they have probably never met. Should admins have the final say? Of course. If you've displayed actions in-game that some admins or an admin took note of, they have the final say to mention to other staff members what you've done, good or bad.

You can demote all you want, but realize you're not receiving any new staff members. Threats of demotion will further decrease incentive to play, and actually going to the lengths of demoting will cause a no-admin presence that is already occurring.

tl;dr: imo you're better off allowing the community to be active in staff applications and expanding staff ranks with limitations of power guided by senior admins or moderators. I think this server has a big fear of admins messing up. I think it's important to realize if an admin messes up, it's not a reflection of your entire team. People think differently, act differently, and live completely different lives. It's time to allow people to be given a chance to mess up, and if they don't make the cut, then, they don't make it. There's no shame in saying, "Hey, we tried."

Edit: People say, "I do not see any potential candidates," and in my time of playing - which isn't long, I can actually name multiple from the top of my head. I won't go into detail of every person, but a couple regular players do stick out. It's a shame the community isn't able to say, "Hey, I've played with this guy a couple times and he's super laid back and all around good person to have in the server."

That's actually a really good point that isn't being brought up.... I'm not sure if this is going on anymore-- but do admins realize people don't actually have to apply to become mod? That applying is just a formality? This didn't happy as often because there were plenty of applications previously, so I think this may have gotten lost overtime. But in the past, admins have been encouraged to talk to players that believe would be a good staff member rather than waiting for them apply.

I'm sorry that some people thought this, but I'm a little more up front than some other people. I don't like to beat around the bush with passive-aggressive conversation and I'll call people out on their issues. There's plenty of staff that felt comfortable enough to come to me in private or by other means of communication.

What I'm saying is that I was staff after you left. I wouldn't let a few people speak for the entire team. I mean, if you're going off of what you've seen and not heard, then you don't have the full story. If you're going off of what people told you, then they could've leaked if they were staff at the time; not my business anymore.

Just please don't go dragging my name or even Falcors name through the dirt when you're not aware of the full situation; at least with me. Keep things objective when looking for solution. When I joined the team, mods were receiving little to no training and didn't have much communication from their leadership. Hell, the community was about to shut down. The staff team has made some serious progress since the new year.

I think it's a valid point to being up that the servers for SGM can get dull and repetitive after a while. Players get tired of it, they break the rules, they test the staff. Some staff aren't as resilient as others and get burnt out even by the repetitiveness of staffing.

Staff are under a microscope that is controlled by a mix of players that want to be toxic as hell and players that truly want to help the community. And bonds might not get formed due to a constantly changing team. Constantly going from forming to storming to barely into norming and back to storming in a short period. It creates cliques and those have always existed in the team.

What I would do if I were an admin would be to post a suggestion to collect data of what the mods, the backbone of the team, would like for things like rewards. Ask them to keep it realistic and get them involved in solving the issues with staffing. Ask them what it would take to get them to staff more and with a better commitment and quality.

The drive to staff isn't there for some people. Those people need to be either revitalized or cut loose.

I think we should have a team of staff members for the servers at night, especially since I've noticed that after 10PM there are little to no staff members online and it seems to be when a lot of trouble starts. I don't know if I'm the only one whose noticed this trend to be honest and it could just be me but I'd thought it was something worth looking into in regards to some of the staff issues we've had lately.

Im not saying names, but i was just ignored for 3 maps when telling staff about players who should have been slain, when werent, and a player who should have been banned, but wasnt, from reports i placed.

Staff should be re-evaluated every so often to see how they are performing imo.
