Title, can't find this posted anywhere else. @Opalium agrees it should be removed. If you agree it should be removed, just rate the post positive, if you disagree, feel free to rate, but go ahead and post so we can really talk about this because I'd love to see why anyone thinks restricting a color when its used like once week (generally for posting shit like staff groups being updated) is smart.

Using "ugly" isnt a good idea, cause theres millions of ugly colors that could be removed by that ruling.

I don't think there is a reason to allow it. But then again all the times that I was staff I never saw a reason to ever use red at all. So I guess i'll stay neutral?

Reason I say no, it makes warnings stand out. If we were to allow everyone to use red, people would meme with it FINAL WARNING but when a staff member would do it no one would take it seriously. With things in what Acnologia did he used the red as part of the rainbow effect, which I saw no problem with and so did Graze and Acno.

Keep red banned due to the fact of it blending in with the rest of SB and no one would take it seriously.

I think that it is useful to have one color that is reserved for important updates/information that the staff team wants to relay as quick as possible to all the users.
Besides that, the color red is a good pick as when you pair it with the black background it immediately draws attention, not to mention how red often stands for 'stop - be warned' especially in traffic, where traffic lights are red when you need to stop, and traffic signs that warn are lined with red (at least in holland)

The fact that it is often only used for staff group updates is not a bad thing in my opinion. If the staff team would continiously post announcements in red in the shoutbox, the effect would wear off and people would be quicker to ignore potentially important announcements.
There for the few times they are used, they're used for a reason. Often a change in staff groups, which directly impacts the entire community.

Also no one has complained about it in 3 and a half years so why would it be changed just to fit your ego?

As for "making things stand out" the issue with shoutbox is youll never hav something stick around for more than a couple hours, and red is basically only used these days for staff groups updating, I've never seen it used because folks like highwon and opal do private testing, they dont do it in public. I'd agree it could be used for announcements but its like why restrict it when its rarely used and the messages barely stick around?

I'm sure people have though its stupid, but no one has a big mouth like me. Also it has nothing to do with my ego, it has stuff to do with me pointing out stupid shit, like you attacking the person suggesting an idea rather than the idea itself.

I mean just because you went ahead and got yourself banned doesn't mean we should just remove everything you are banned for. Red has a meaning to it and is banned so it can keep on having a meaning when it is used. Also as people have said before there is a lot of other colors to choose from so I don't see the problem.

It will get the point across to the people there at that moment and hopefully remind them not to do it or else they could face a punishment. If the warning sticks out enough others will tell people hey dont do that, like with the red in SB or the eye straining colors. You yourself have even used to call an admin to a situation or a staff member. A certain member had said a racial slur in SB and you used the red color to bring it to our attention that they had done so. If we were to allow the color red into the SB, those messages could simply blend in and lose the effect of getting peoples attention.

In my opinion the shoutbox can be seen as the heart of SGM. I feel it's a place where we can all conversate and unwind. Not just that, but it's a place most users who are on the forums will look at and/or use.
The exact reason that one sentence will never stick around for longer than a couple of hours is because the shoutbox is used by so many.

That's why I believe it is a good thing that important staff related issues are also notified, in red, in the shoutbox. The place where you can reach the most people who are online at that time.

    Other alternatives would be
    • A notification when you open the forums, like a pop up, that you would have to click away every time
    • A large -banner like- notification telling you of an important change
I think we currenly use the least obtrusive method of reaching people about important changes.
And yes, staff group updates directly influence the community, so I do think that is an important change.

For your next point, I can only guess, but I believe development means you will be constantly looking for ways to improve, to strive for an easier/better solution or just create something entirely new. Besides that, there's also a lot of things breaking all the times in the background where only a few would notice it. So I'm glad I don't get notified every time a developer is fixing something in the background, or looking into code adding something new, or looking for ways to make it better.

Currently, It's good to have one color that staff could use, even if it is only to warn players or prevent discussions from going out of hand.

"red has a meaning" because it was given a meaning and that meaning has diminished and it means nothing these days because it isnt used.

The only reason I used red in shoutbox is because some admins are so frothing at the mouth to punish people that as soon as they see red the read shoutbox, compared to just typing "any admins" in normal text doesnt stand out.

The only thing with red is that staff should stop being so strict about it being used. Who cares if someone makes a random meme with red color and then stops? Just starts pointless arguments when staff warn for red being used like once.
While you claim red has these and these purposes, to be fair to xpro, 90% staff does not use red when its "correct" to use(For example if you look at sb appeals etc warnings are extremely rarely given in red) so red becomes basically a color that nobody uses and is just not allowed.
I agree with Carned though that it should just stay banned as it groups up nicely with annoying colors to look at. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Hello,

Just some history behind the entire red text thing. When we decided to make a specific color for things like announcements, we were having issues with staff not knowing whether or not a server was staffless; this was before the numbers were next to the server showing staff count. So, we decided to reserve RED for the simple fact that it stands out and can easily be spotted by someone scrolling through past messages or someone that has it in their peripherals.

After the numbers were implemented, it was still used to notify staff of a server being staffless. Its used to bring attention to small things that are usually shoutbox related. Its more of a staff utility than anything else.

Shoutbox doesn't have some form of adminchat to get a staff members attention. So red text is the next best thing. It's simple enough for people to select and people don't really have to guess when it come to announcements.

Now, we have the announcement bar above shoutbox which allows for more permanent announcements to be made(i.e. Minecraft servers, TS servers, special events, etc.). Then for even larger scale announcements like content, we have the subforums.

I think maybe the ROEs of using red need to be revamped a little bit. Like if staff groups have been updated and it's literally one person being added/removed, then just say who was added or removed. Call for staff using red. Keep it reserved for acute issues.
