I honestly think that calling a KOS on detective shouldn't be punished at all, no matter what. If any it should be treated as spam if done multiple times, like any other form of spam. The player following that KOS, however, should be slain, like any other form of RDM, and perhaps face the consequences of toxic gameplay.

Since when has this rule even been a thing? I was told quite a few times not to follow through with this and that it was miscommunication

Replace detective with location and you have my opinion. It was never a valid KOS in that it didn't contain the correct info to be followed and thus he who follows falls, but the caller walks cause they just said the equivalent of KOS the guy in the Link skin.. except they get shot for it.

Would love to hear @Highwon 's thoughts on what the punishment should be, considering that in 2013 and 2014 it was a warning and a slay if people kept doing it, regardless of if the detective was killed or not(1) (2) (3).

Though the punishment was more to deter people from causing confusion by kosing a detective and getting people killed through it.

Meh, I would agree if it was just a blanket "KOS the detective" statement, but they literally say a name, which is all the requirements for a followable kos besides the "kill" part of the statement , really.

The linked threads show compelling arguments on why KOSing a detective can cause confusion:
In all my time playing TTT, I've personally never thought it caused problems, honestly because I'm such a god at the game.

However if the scenarios shown above are enough cause for concern, then explicitly state that KOSing detectives is punishable in the extended rules (I wonder why it wasn't even there anymore), or eliminate any potential confusion by showing a list of chosen detectives every start of the round so that we wouldn't need to punish people for "toxic gameplay" over something almost everyone does.

I believe that you should identify the root cause of the situation and address it there. That's why the arguments were in place to punish the person who called the KOS; they are the cause of the confusion. Now, you could go deeper and ask them why they call it.

However, if players want to prevent confusion, I would suggest making it so that when someone uses their radio bind or uses the players full name, that the name of the detective is in BLUE in chat.

I'm not comfortable with letting the person who called the KOS skate without a slay because, in my honest opinion, they are at least partially responsible for the kill. As @Dani has said earlier in this thread, if the KOS hadn't been called, there would most likely have been no kill.

That said, I think that the act of calling any "joke" KOS's should be considered as both toxic game play and chat spam, and punishable as such in addition to a slay if the KOS was acted upon.

    My 2 cents.
